If you are a fan of pub quizzes or have consistently found yourself winning your local quiz, perhaps it's time to consider entering in your local quiz league. Most areas will have a quiz league (if not several), and there are also district and regional leagues that take new entrants. Quiz leagues generally have much higher stakes than normal quizzes, with the prizes being significant and the competition being fierce. Leagues are usually a lot trickier than the standard pub quizzes, and are taken very seriously by the participants and officials.
The traditional format of a quiz league is one which runs on a home and away basis. Regulated by quiz-masters and officials, two teams usually compete against one another throughout a series of themed rounds. If playing by the rules determined by the Merseyside Quiz Leagues, the questions will be posed to individuals rather than the entire team. The individual will have the opportunity to answer the question themselves (without conferring with their team), or can pass it on to another member within their group. If they are successful themselves they will usually score two points; if they pass it on to another team-member and they are correct it will only score a single point. Some leagues allow the individual to pass the question to someone on the opposite team in the hope that they will answer incorrectly, thus scoring the original team one point. After a number of rounds the night's winner is announced, with the final prize being awarded after several nights of play.
